The monument commemorates the passage of Napoleon's army through a narrow mountain pass, and serves as a reminder that in war, someone always loses. The bronze plaque is combined with an eight-metre-long carved inscription. How do you know how much bronze will shrink after casting? There was not enough room to carve the letters and we had to shorten the chisels to a little more than a hand's width.
